We eat tofu and tempeh every week. So far I can’t find them in bulk. I’d love to make them at home, but I don’t have the time right now. Any suggestions on how to avoid non-recyclable food packaging?

The biggest challenge I’m having with the plastic free lifestyle is keeping food fresh without plastic bags. I’m experimenting with different ways of storing home baked bread, but so far, nothing seems to work. Wrapping the bread in a cloth keeps it fresh about three days, airtight bread box, about 5 days, refrigerated bread (wrapped in anything) about 30 hours, but in plastic bag the bread lasts for nearly 3 weeks before loss of texture and/or mold. There must be a non-plastic solution. I’m on the look out for a breathable bread box, maybe something made from wood… or maybe some food safe kraft paper? Adding preservatives to the bread isn’t an option, as it is sourdough it has a decently long shelf life with only flour, water and salt. Any thoughts or solutions you’ve found for bread storage would be great.

Hair products: I have naturally wavy hair but it’s also what you could call “unruly”. If air drying, I usually use some sort of mousse or gel (spray or otherwise) type product… ideas?
Brands of hot sauce: knowing that in Canada I may not be able to find what you may recommend, have you found any without plastic? Or, how can one go about making it?

Our deep freeze is a lid-on-top style (rather than stand up) and I suspect when we begin to use glass to store leftovers there is a risk of breakage. Does anyone know of any sort of shelving systems we could use?
The freezer does have one basket that sits on the top, and we have another (plastic) storage container that we use to keep all of our homemade stock (in 2 cup plastic containers, ugh) separate from everything else in there. Any resources?
If anyone has natural suggestions for removing a blueberry liqueur stain from beige carpet, I would be forever grateful. It’s now a few days old and isn’t too bad, but….
Oh, and natural stuff to put in a steam cleaner as well as that’s in the plans too.

Winter composting ideas aside from vermiculture, which we already do? We live somewhere that if we leave any food outside, critters will get it. It’s too early for bears but they’ll be out soon enough!
Cheesecloth (actually for cheesemaking!) seems to only be sold in plastic packaging. Is there an alternative/environmentally conscious brand out there?
